With the changing of the seasons comes the perfect opportunity to change up your hair. Why change your hair color for fall?

We hear you: If it’s not broken, don’t fix it! If you’re happy with your current hair color or just don’t feel like spending the time or money on a new ‘do, we’re all for it! Choosing the right hair color for you all comes down to what makes you feel most confident.

However, changing up your hair color for the different seasons can help get you more in the festive spirit and mood for the season and weather. For example, there’s nothing that screams summer like a bright blonde, and getting your highlights retouched for the sunny weather can make you feel more excited about summer. Similarly, a pretty, deep red is the epitome of fall, and can get you excited about sweater weather. “As we enter the colder months, we are seeing requests for colors that are ‘cozy’ and have more contrast in the hair,” explains celebrity colorist Artur Kirsh .

Further, trying out a fall hair color provides an opportunity to find a shade that fits your undertones and features best—you won’t know unless you experiment! Have gone most of your life blonde but have cool undertones and blue eyes? Perhaps a cool-toned brunette would suit you better! Fall provides the perfect time to change it up and try something new that might just be your new favorite.

“This fall, the most requested hair colors tend to be rich brunettes, muted coppers, and soft blondes. These shades are popular because they bring warmth and richness to your look, perfectly reflecting the cozy essence of the season,” says celebrity colorist Amber Maynard .

“The 2024 hair color trend is all about lived-in color, the perfect solution for low maintenance but high impact celebrity-inspired hair color that everyone is asking for,” says Sean Godard , celebrity colorist and Redken Master Artist and Global Brand Ambassador.

Not only does lived-in color provide a flawless grow-out process, thanks to the technique of seamlessly blending and transitioning the color into your roots, it also can save you hundreds of dollars and hours spent on the salon. Thanks to this easy grow-out process, you don’t need to get touch-ups as often, and hair stays looking fresh and new for weeks or months longer than usual.

This technique is especially great for blondes. “Lived-In highlights is perfect for clients craving a low maintenance blonde, as you still maintain the bright blonde, especially around the face, but you also get a soft transition from your natural base color,” says Godard. “This eliminates any harsh stripe-y foil lines and allows for a natural, seamless grow-out resulting in color so natural, people will assume you were born with it.”

How To Do Trendy and Flattering Lived-In Blonde Hair Color At Home

Anyone who's ever needed a good confidence boost (so essentially all of us!) knows one of the best ways to get it is by scheduling a much-needed hair appointment. Whether it's a root touch up, a dramatic chop or some new multi-dimensional highlights, the feeling you get from walking out of the salon is unmatched. […]

Even more, lived-in color works for those of us with curls, says Godard: “For all the curly girls out there, lived-in curlyage provides the extra dimension everyone craves. This high impact technique will enhance your curl pattern providing pops of color and added texture which really defines the voluminous shape of curly hair, giving you that sunkissed, ‘I just got back from a beach vacation vibe’.”

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better, lived-in color is great for those wanting to brighten up the pieces around their face, aka have blonde money pieces. “The lived-in piece serves as the fall 2024 update of the face frame highlight trend. You will notice that the face frame continues to be popular, but what’s different about it this year is how the color spills out internally from underneath as opposed to being placed on the top,” explains Godard. “This technique is especially great for naturally darker bases because even if you want to turn up the contrast, it will still grow out seamlessly, so you don’t have to come back to the salon as frequently for the heavy lifting highlights.”

    Latte brunette

Fall is the season for brunettes, and more specifically, warm, rich brunette hues. If you’re ready to say goodbye to your summer blonde and go darker for fall, try the hyper-popular “latte brunette” color.

“Latte Brunette works as a rich, warm shade that blends brown tones with creamy, light highlights, reminiscent of a latte coffee. This color has been all over the red carpet and will continue to be popular,” claims Godard.

Part of what makes latte brunette so appealing is its ability to add dimension to hair, which can make hair appear fuller, thicker and healthier. “The trend combines medium to dark brown as the base with lighter, golden or caramel highlights to create a multidimensional, sun-kissed effect,” says Godard. “It aims to add depth and warmth to brunette hair, making it appear more vibrant and textured.”

    Cayenne copper

Red is the color of the season, and not just when it comes to the trending dark red manis or cherry red accessories; It applies to fall hair color trends, too! The red hue in particular that is trending this year for fall? Cayenne copper, according to Godard.

“Cayenne copper’s popularity will bleed into the fall as it exudes a vibrant, fiery shade that combines deep red and orange tones, resembling the titular spice: Cayenne pepper. This hair color is bold and intense, offering a rich, warm look that stands out,” explains Godard. “It often includes varying shades of red and copper to create a multidimensional effect, adding depth and brightness to the hair. Cayenne copper is an excellent choice for those looking to make a striking and dynamic change to their hair color and a step up from last season’s cowboy copper trend.”

And if you want to add a little more warmth, Kirsh says you absolutely can with copper: “As for our redheads, the copper hues are here to stay but with gold pieces that are a fun resemblance of the changing leaves.”

    Golden platinum blonde

Cool-toned blonde had its moment for quite a few years, but now we’re making way for warmer blondes. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you need to give up your platinum—but instead of an ashy platinum blonde, try out a golden platinum blonde for fall, suggests L’Oréal Professionnel Colorist & Ambassador Sabrina Bias .

Golden platinum blonde is a “warmer alternative to trending colors we saw in the summer,” she says. This warmer tone can help warm up the complexion, which can be a huge bonus in the chillier months when our summer tans start to fade.

    Cherry cola red

Cayenne pepper red isn’t the only fiery hue trending for fall. Cherry cola red is another that we’ve seen dominating social media and the red carpet. The deep red color with brown undertones is the perfect color to make a bold statement this fall. Plus, its rich tone gives hair added depth and dimension for a thicker-looking mane, making it perfect for those with thin hair.

How to prolong your fall hair color

Now that you’re ready to don a new hair color for fall, we asked these stylists for their expert tips for prolonging your color.

    Use color-safe shampoo and conditioner

A huge part of why your hair color fades has to do with how you're washing it. To make color last as long as possible, make sure you’re using a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, like Redken Acidic Color Gloss Shampoo and Conditioner , recommends Godard. Shampoos that are not made for color can be too harsh and stripping on your color.

Bias also advises using the right shampoo and conditioner, like L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox Shampoo and Conditioning Mask . “Both products help neutralize metals found in our water which can cause oxidation of color & breakage,” she says. “I recommend using the shampoo 2-3 times per week followed by the mask to keep frizz at bay and hair nourished, and maintain color vibrancy.”

    Protect hair from heat

Not only does using a heat protectant help protect hair from damage, it also helps to slow down color fading. “Heat protectant is a must when it comes to protecting fade out of hair color, so I always use Redken Acidic Color Gloss Heat Protection Leave In Treatment ,” he suggests. “It’s lightweight and goes on the hair prior to a blow dry, which is good since blow drying usually winds up being the first step of heat damage in hair color.”

Further, Godard says to turn down the heat when it comes to hot tools, which he says is the “number 1 culprit for not only damage, but fading out hair color prematurely.”

    Rinse with cool water

Goddard says rinsing with cool water can make a huge difference in how fast your color fades. Using cool water instead of hot on your hair can also help prevent damage to strands.

“Always use conditioner and always rinse thoroughly with warm to cool water to keep the shine and color from fading and looking dull,” agrees Kirsh.
