The New York Yankees are set to return to the ALCS for the fifth time since their last World Series title.

The Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals in the ALDS and will wait to find out their opponent ahead of Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Monday. The team has made it to the ALCS five times since their last World Series title in 2009. The team has gone 0-5 in those series.

How has the team’s ALCS woes led to a 15-year World Series drought?

The Yankees reached the ALCS in 2022 after beating the Cleveland Guardians in the first round of the postseason. The Bronx Bombers were swept by the eventual champion Houston Astros.

The Yankees and Astros met in the 2019 ALCS as well. The Bronx Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the series but then dropped Game 2 in extra innings. The Astros went on to take a 3-1 series lead before the Yankees rebounded with a Game 5 win. The Astors then punched their ticket to the World Series in dramatic fashion as Jose Altuve hit a walk-off home run off of Aroldis Chapman in Game 6.

The Astros won their first title in 2017, and they defeated the Yankees on their way to the title. The two teams met in the ALCS. Despite the Bronx Bombers taking a 3-2 series lead, they were held to one run over the final two games of the series as the Astors would advance to the World Series.

The 2012 Yankees met the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS, but they too were held quiet on offense. The team scored four runs in Game 1 but was then shut out in Game 2. The Yankees then scored one run in each of the next two games as the Tigers took the series in four games.

The 2010 team fell in six games to the Texas Rangers in the ALCS as well. The Yankees were outscored 38-19 and the Rangers would go on to make their first of two consecutive World Series appearances.
