LINDSIDE – Greenbrier West dropped a 32-6 decision to James Monroe Friday night in a battle of teams just inside their respective playoff fields. The win improves the Mavericks to 5-2 on the season while Greenbrier West falls to 4-3.
James Monroe got on the scoreboard first with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Layton Dowdy to Ryan Mann. Brandon Poticher blocked Peyton Gardinier’s PAT. The Mavericks led 6-0 at the 9:00 mark of the first quarter.
The Mavericks got in the endzone again when Dowdy ran the ball in himself from 7 yards out. Gardinier missed the extra point, but James Monroe led 12-0 with 11:37 to go in the half.
Greenbrier West got on the board with a 1-yard, Evan Vandall touchdown run with 4:23 left in the second quarter. Vandall’s two-point conversion pass failed leaving James Monroe with a 12-6 advantage.
A controversial call by the officiating crew negated a West fumble recovery and possible touchdown on James Monroe’s next drive. The referee ruled the play an incomplete pass incorrectly, and multiple fouls were assessed against the Cavaliers following the play. The favorable field position helped the Mavericks find the endzone a third time when Dowdy scrambled for a 19-yard score. West defended the two-point try successfully, and the Mavericks carried an 18-6 into halftime.
The two teams remained scoreless through the third quarter. James Monroe found paydirt in the fourth quarter when Frederick Parker scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. Gardinier’s kick was good, and the Mavericks advantage was 25-6 with 5:51 left in the game.
Parker added a mop-up score with 2:31 left, going 22 yards for the score. Gardinier added the PAT for the final margin of 32-6.
