What a finish we had in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race. For the second year in a row, Sam Mayer wins in a walk-off at the Roval. Mayer is now on his way to the Round of 8. He had to win a week after a DQ at Talladega, and he did just that.

It is hard to win an Xfinity Series race. To repeat a win at a track is even more difficult. To do that to advance to the second round of the playoffs two years in a row? Call it whatever you want, Sam Mayer just did it.

This race did have a bit of controversy. A caution flag came out feet from Parker Kligerman taking the white flag and winning the race. Mayer was given another chance with the overtime restart, and he took full advantage.

A walk-off win, once again, for Mayer!

The end of this one was wild. Kligerman looked like he had it in the bag . Mayer had harassed him and hounded him for laps. However, the 48 held strong. Just as it looked like he would take the white flag, the caution came out.

NASCAR would go back and show that the caution lights came on prior to Kligerman taking the white flag. It was by literal inches. That was all it took to send this race into overtime, and that was all Sam Mayer needed to get the win.

Shane van Gisbergen, Sheldon Creed, Riley Herbst, and Parker Kligerman were eliminated from the playoffs. SVG was out by just two points to Jesse Love.

Sam Mayer advances with walk-off win

Say what you will about Sam Mayer, the kid gets it done under pressure. Two years in a row he went into the Roval with a must-win situation. Two years in a row, he walks away with his ticket to the Round of 8.

While he has had issues this season, a ton of DNFs and other mistakes, this has not been a lost season for Mayer. He will not return to JR Motorsports in 2025. Instead, he will move to the newly named Haas Factory Team, the remnants of Stewart-Haas Racing.

Again, Shane van Gisbergen and AJ Allmendinger were in this race. Mayer earned it, straight up. Allmendinger takes his first-ever loss in the Xfinity Series at the Roval. You just can’t discredit the No. 1 team or the driver today. They were fantastic.

Now, the hard work begins. Points reset. Sam Mayer is 8 points below the cutline, but he is fifth overall in the Round of 8. There are only four spots in Phoenix, will Mayer be able to claim one like he did last season?
