Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said shell casings indicate that gunfire was exchanged across a street near campus between the groups. Metro Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain said the gunfire didn't appear to be directly related to Tennessee State University events that had included a parade and other festivities earlier in the day.

The football game was taking place in another part of town when the gunfire broke out . He said: "It's unfortunate that a few folks ruined it for everybody. We have to come to a point to stop this violence."

Nashville Fire Department personnel were in the area because they had been taking part in a NSU homecoming parade. Loney said: "As that gunfire erupted, our crews were right here where that occurred. Our personnel recounted to me some moments where they ripped off their belts and did things like, use those as tourniquets, because they did not have their medical bags with them."

Tennessee State University texted students warning of active shooters off campus at 5.30pm. The shooters were described as a Black man wearing a green top and pants and a Black man in a black and white top with jean. They may have been traveling in a Ford Fusion.

It is homecoming week for Tennessee State University. A parade and street fair were held on Jefferson Street before the football game against Eastern Illinois University kicked off at nearby at at Nissan Stadium at 5pm. Police cordoned off intersection of 27th Avenue and Jefferson Street in Nashville and said the scene is secured.
