The Detroit Lions are ready to keep the party going in their backfield.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Saturday that the Lions have agreed to a contract extension with running back David Montgomery. The extension is for two years and $18.25 million (with $10.5 million in new guaranteed money, Schefter adds).

The 27-year-old Montgomery was originally under contract for just this season and next season. But the move by the Lions will keep Montgomery contractually tied to the team through the 2027 NFL season.

It has been a fruitful partnership so far for the Lions and Montgomery. The former third-round pick led Detroit in rushing last season with 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns as the Lions made it all the way to the NFC title game. This season, Montgomery has posted 274 rushing yards and a team-high four touchdowns through four games.

While Detroit also has 22-year-old former first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs factoring significantly in the run game, they are giving themselves more certainty to work with at running back before Gibbs becomes extension-eligible in two offseasons. Montgomery has also become a pretty big fan favorite in Detroit , and now he is set to be a Lion for the long haul.
