Hyundai and Waymo’s new partnership could bring autonomous driving to your driveway

Hyundai Motor Company and Waymo have announced a multi-year strategic partnership aimed at transforming autonomous driving. While the initial focus is on integrating Waymo’s sixth-generation self-driving system into Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 for use in Waymo’s ride-hailing fleet, this collaboration hints at a future where consumers might be able to buy fully autonomous Hyundai vehicles.
First steps toward a consumer autonomous Hyundai
The partnership, announced earlier this week, begins with Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 SUV being outfitted with Waymo’s cutting-edge autonomous technology, known as the “Waymo Driver.” The modified IONIQ 5s will join Waymo’s growing fleet of fully autonomous vehicles, allowing the ride-hailing company to expand its services to more locations. These vehicles will be assembled at Hyundai’s new EV manufacturing facility in Georgia, with plans for on-road testing to begin by late 2025.
But what does this mean for everyday drivers? While the initial goal is focused on ride-hailing, there’s a clear pathway for Hyundai’s consumer models to benefit from Waymo’s autonomous technology in the future.
Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 is just the first vehicle in this partnership, but both companies are actively exploring further opportunities. The idea of a fully autonomous Hyundai model available for purchase is no longer just a distant possibility — it could be on the horizon.
“Waymo’s transformational technology is improving road safety where they operate, and the IONIQ 5 is the ideal vehicle to scale this further,” said José Muñoz, president and global COO of Hyundai Motor Company. “Importantly, this is the first step in the partnership between the two companies and we are actively exploring additional opportunities for collaboration.”
With Hyundai’s strong track record in electric vehicles and Waymo’s world-leading autonomous driving systems, the two companies are well-positioned to bring self-driving technology directly to consumers.
A glimpse into an autonomous future
The partnership represents a significant step forward in bringing autonomous technology from a niche ride-hailing service to a mainstream driving experience.
“We are thrilled to partner with Hyundai as we further our mission to be the world’s most trusted driver,” said Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO at Waymo. “Hyundai’s focus on sustainability and strong electric vehicle roadmap makes them a great partner for us as we bring our fully autonomous service to more riders in more places.”
As of now, Hyundai’s focus is on supporting Waymo’s growing fleet, but the implications for consumers are clear. For drivers waiting to experience full autonomy in their own vehicles, this partnership could be the first step toward that future.
