Cooler Weather and Rain Sweep Across Metro Detroit, Lake Huron Braces for Rough Waters

Cool temperatures and persistent rain hit Metro Detroit as Lake Huron faces high waves. Weather updates from the NWS warn of unsettled conditions this weekend.

Expect Cooler Temperatures and Rain Showers Throughout Metro Detroit; Small Craft Advisories Issued for Lake Huron

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 11:36 PM on October 12, 2024.

Unsettled Weather Brings Cooler Temperatures and Rain to Metro Detroit

A wave of cooler-than-average temperatures has taken over Metro Detroit this weekend, accompanied by rain showers and scattered thunderstorms, especially south of the M-59 corridor. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the region will experience below-normal temperatures through early next week, bringing occasional rain, particularly in the Thumb region.

Saturday night saw a significant amount of precipitation in parts of Detroit, with showers expected to continue into Sunday. Isolated thunderstorms and drizzle are likely across the region, with conditions becoming cloudy and cool for most of the day.

Southern Metro Detroit to See Most of the Rainfall as Cooler Conditions Persist

Rainfall will be concentrated mainly in southern Metro Detroit, with thunderstorms being a possibility in the I-94 corridor. The National Weather Service reports that the heaviest rain will hit this area overnight and into early Sunday morning. Forecasters expect an inch to an inch-and-a-quarter of rain, with some urban flooding possible in low-lying areas.

For residents further north, in cities like Saginaw and Flint, showers will be less intense, with only light rainfall expected. However, the lingering effects of this storm system will keep temperatures low across the entire region.

Lake Huron Under Small Craft Advisories as Rough Conditions Expected

In addition to the inland weather, Lake Huron is experiencing high winds and elevated wave conditions, leading to Small Craft Advisories from Sunday night into Tuesday. Wind speeds are expected to reach 20 to 25 knots, creating waves as high as 10 feet. Mariners are advised to avoid the water, as the onshore flow will make navigating dangerous.

The unsettled weather across the region will likely continue into the beginning of next week, as cooler temperatures remain. Highs are expected to stay 10 degrees below average, with gusty winds making conditions feel even colder.
