Waterspouts, Thunderstorms, and Even Snow! What’s Next for Ohio’s Crazy October Weather?

Cold air and showers hit Northern Ohio, with winds causing lake-effect rain and potential waterspouts on Lake Erie. Stay updated on local weather changes.

Cold Front Brings Rain and the Season's First Snowflakes to Ohio’s Higher Elevations

CLEVELAND — Issued by the National Weather Service at 11:01 PM on October 12, 2024.

Cold Front Brings Showers and Cooler Air Across Northern Ohio

A powerful cold front is sweeping across Northern Ohio, bringing showers and dropping temperatures as low as the upper 30s in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts that this weather pattern will persist through Sunday, with rain showers likely to increase in intensity and spread across the region, particularly affecting areas along Lake Erie.

Winds will shift, with gusts up to 20 knots expected, and waterspouts could develop on Lake Erie due to rapidly cooling temperatures. The area is also bracing for the first snowflakes of the season in higher elevations, though no significant accumulation is expected at this time.

Lake Erie Faces Potential Waterspouts and Gusty Winds Through Early Next Week

Residents and boaters along Lake Erie should take note of the changing weather patterns, as the National Weather Service has warned of small craft advisories in effect through Wednesday. Winds will shift to the northwest, increasing to 15-25 knots, creating potentially hazardous conditions for mariners. In addition, the NWS notes the possibility of waterspouts on the lake through Tuesday due to a combination of cold air aloft and unstable conditions over the warmer lake surface.

Showers and thunderstorms will likely become more widespread overnight, with heavier rain expected on Sunday morning. Areas in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio are at particular risk of seeing heavier downpours, with possible rainfall totals reaching 1 to 1.5 inches through Monday.

First Snowflakes of the Season Possible in Higher Elevations

The upper-level trough moving through the region will bring not only rain but also a shot of much colder air, with temperatures expected to fall significantly. The first snowflakes of the season may make an appearance in the higher elevations of northeast Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania as temperatures dip into the 30s by late Sunday night.

However, accumulation is not expected, and the snow will likely mix with rain throughout the day. These conditions will linger into Monday, with cooler-than-average temperatures holding steady across the region.
