Chilly Winds and Frost Follow Sunday's Cold Front for Chicago Area

Chicago area braces for windy conditions, lake effect showers, and potential frost following Sunday's cold front. Gusts may reach up to 40 mph.

Strong Winds and Falling Temperatures Will Usher in Lake-Effect Showers and Cold Conditions Through Midweek

CHICAGO — Issued by the National Weather Service at 9:04 PM on October 12, 2024.

Strong Winds and Cold Front to Bring Significant Cool-Down to Chicago

Residents across northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana will experience gusty winds and a sharp drop in temperatures following a cold front on Sunday afternoon. Winds could reach up to 40 mph by late Sunday, as cooler air settles in. This change is expected to bring lake-effect showers and the possibility of frost as early as Sunday night.

    Thunderstorms Possible Late Tonight

Before the cold front, northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana could see isolated thunderstorms through midnight. The activity has primarily focused over Lake Michigan and southern Wisconsin, with scattered showers expected to continue.

Although severe storms are not anticipated, some areas could experience pea-sized hail and brief gusts. The National Weather Service has maintained a 30-50% chance of showers in the Chicago area tonight, particularly for far northeastern Illinois.

Winds to Strengthen on Sunday, Frost to Follow

As the cold front moves through northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon, winds will shift to the northwest and gusts of up to 40 mph are expected. Behind this front, a much cooler air mass will move in, with temperatures dropping into the upper 50s by Sunday evening.

Residents in the Chicago metro and northwest Indiana should prepare for frosty nights through midweek, as nighttime temperatures will fall into the upper 30s to low 40s.

Lake-Effect Showers to Continue Into Tuesday

Lake-effect showers will ramp up late Sunday and may persist through Tuesday due to cooler air passing over warmer Lake Michigan waters. The National Weather Service also warns of the possibility of waterspouts forming over Lake Michigan, especially near the Indiana shoreline.
