First Freeze of the Season Coming to Minnesota – Find Out How Cold It’ll Get!

Minnesota and Wisconsin brace for a cold front bringing gusty winds and freezing temperatures. Expect below-normal temps and isolated showers this weekend.

Wind Gusts Up to 40 mph and Freezing Temperatures Expected Early Next Week

TWIN CITIES — Issued by the National Weather Service at 7:09 PM on October 12, 2024.

Cold Front to Bring Gusty Winds, Freezing Temperatures, and Scattered Showers to Minnesota and Wisconsin

A cold front is set to sweep across Minnesota and western Wisconsin this weekend, bringing with it the first below-normal temperatures in over a month. Residents in both states can expect isolated showers, gusty winds, and the potential for freezing temperatures early next week. This marks the beginning of a cooler weather pattern after an extended period of warmer-than-average conditions.

Cooler Weather and Gusty Winds Expected Through Tuesday

Starting tonight, northwest winds will bring a significant cool-down across the region. Winds will become gusty by Sunday afternoon, reaching up to 35-40 mph in some areas, making it feel noticeably colder than recent days. Areas along and north of I-94 will experience isolated to scattered rain showers, with the highest chances for precipitation in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

    • Highs on Sunday: Expect temperatures ranging from the lower 50s in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin to the upper 50s further west.
    • Lows on Tuesday morning: Widespread freezing temperatures are likely, with lows dipping into the upper 20s to low 30s in parts of Minnesota.

Isolated Showers and Cloudy Skies for the Weekend

As the cold front moves across the region, scattered showers will develop, especially along I-94 and points north. These showers are expected to persist through Sunday afternoon, though western Minnesota will likely remain dry with partly sunny skies. While the rain won't be significant, it may bring a welcome reprieve for areas that have experienced dry conditions recently.

Warmer Weather to Return by Late Next Week

While the start of the week will be marked by chilly and windy conditions, temperatures are expected to rebound by the end of the week. By Thursday and Friday, highs will climb back into the 70s as a warm and dry pattern returns to the region. However, forecasters are keeping an eye on a storm system that could bring more widespread rain by next Friday or Saturday.
