    In November 1913, the Great Lakes experienced one of the most devastating storms in maritime history. Known as the "White Hurricane," this deadly storm claimed more than 250 lives and destroyed dozens of ships. The storm was unprecedented not only in its power but also in its duration, lasting four days and wreaking havoc across Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie​

    The Great Lakes: Unprepared for Disaster

    The White Hurricane struck suddenly, catching many ships and sailors unprepared. The SS Charles S. Price, a freighter with a crew of 28, was one of the storm’s victims. The ship was found floating upside down, with divers later identifying it by its nameplate. Similarly, the SS Argus and SS James Carruthers were lost in the storm, contributing to the tragic toll​

    The Aftermath: Snow, Chaos, and Loss

    The storm’s impact extended far beyond the lakes. Cities like Cleveland were paralyzed by heavy snowfall, which accumulated up to 22 inches, halting transportation and crippling communication lines. Life-saving stations like the one at Pointe Aux Barques were obliterated by massive waves​

    In the wake of the storm, families searched the shores for bodies of lost sailors, while communities struggled to recover from the overwhelming devastation.

    More than a century later, the 1913 storm remains a grim reminder of the power of nature. It is still regarded as one of the most destructive storms to ever hit the Great Lakes, and it reshaped how we understand and prepare for maritime
