The Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team had some chances but came out on the wrong side in the Ice Breaker Tournament championship on Saturday night, falling 2-1 to Omaha in overtime.

The Maroon and Gold got on the board first when Mason Nevers jammed in a rebound with 5:34 left in the first period.

The Gophers were strong defensively in the first, too, taking over 10 minutes before allowing the Mavericks to even get a shot on goal.

However, in the second, after a great attempt by Brody Lamb on the power play rang up the post, Omaha went down the ice and scored shorthanded to even the score at 1-1.

After two periods, the Gophers had a staggering 39-11 edge in shots, but Mavericks goalie Simon Latkoczy was a brick wall.

Minnesota peppered him with over a dozen more shots in the third period but the game went to overtime and, 54 seconds later, Omaha netted the winner.

Three Gophers did make the all-tournament team, as did Omaha’s netminder. They are:

    • F Connor Kurth,
    • D Ryan Chesley, and
    • D Sam Rinzel.

The Gophers are back in action next weekend at in-state rival UMD for a series at Amsoil Arena. Those will both be shown on Fox 9+.
