Popular Gulf Coast Tourist Island Closed After Milton, But Reopening Soon

If you’re planning a weekend trip to Anna Maria Island, you’ll need to hit pause—at least for now. The popular Gulf Coast getaway is still closed to the public as it recovers from the damage caused by Hurricane Milton on October 10. As of Friday, only emergency responders are allowed across the Cortez Bridge, according to Holmes Beach Police.

The good news? Officials say the island is expected to reopen on Saturday morning. But in the meantime, water service is being restored with a precautionary boil water advisory in place. So if you’re there, make sure to boil your water before drinking, cooking, or brushing your teeth until the advisory is lifted.

Hurricane Milton hit parts of the island pretty hard, including the destruction of a local favorite, the Rod and Reel Pier, a seafood spot that’s been around since 1947. Anna Maria Island, known for its chill vibe, small-town feel, and absence of high-rise buildings and chain restaurants, is a go-to for people looking to escape the hustle of city life. Preferred ways to get around? Bikes, golf carts, and the island’s free trolley.
