Roger Goodell Facing Backlash Over Major Super Bowl Update

The NFL played its third of five international games this season in Week 6 — an interconference matchup between the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars in London. That number will continue to rise, too, as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has already suggested the international game total could reach 16 in the coming years.

While the NFL continues to break ground with regular season games in new territories around the globe, such a Brazil in Week 1, the league's biggest treasure, the Super Bowl, has never formally entered the expansion conversation. Until now.

According to reporting from ABC News on Sunday, Goodell's stance on the matter has changed.

“We’ve always traditionally tried to play a Super Bowl in an NFL city — that was always sort of a reward for the cities that have NFL franchises,” Goodell said at a fan forum in London when asked about moving the big game outside of the United States.

“But things change. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that happens one day.”

Football fans catching wind of the development on social media were not thrilled about the idea, as many lashed out at Goodell, some even calling for his job.

"We need a new commissioner," one fan wrote .

    "There mu$t be a rea$on why Commi$$ioner Goodell i$ open to the po$$ibility…" someone joked .

"Super Bowl was in my city last year and the economic benefits were clear as day. The NFL needs a new commissioner," someone said .

"That would be a betrayal of the American people," remarked a fan.

"Can’t believe we’re getting a European Super Bowl before a team in Canada," someone added .

"Man, I feel for the players. They are playing for a Commissioner & League that doesn't give a s*** about the players, just money," another fan posted .

"You can't tell me the @NFL truly does not care about its own fans. The greed is oozing out. Even letting this be one of Roger (Goodell's) @nflcommish intrusive thoughts is the greatest form of blasphemy," another added .

At minimum, a potential overseas Super Bowl is years away.

The big games' next three locations are already set in stone: 2025 in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome, 2026 in Santa Clara, California at Levi's Stadium and 2027 in Los Angeles (Inglewood) at SoFi Stadium.
