David Montgomery breaks two Detroit Lions franchise records in Week 6

Running back David Montgomery has been everything the Detroit Lions could have hoped for and more since he was signed in free agency in 2023, and he has since been rewarded with an extension that will keep him in Motown for even longer.

On the heels of that extension, Montgomery was dishing out more punishment in the Week 6 game against the Dallas Cowboys , with the veteran running back tallying three carries for 28 yards on the first drive of the game.

One of those carries found pay dirt, and with the touchdown Montgomery broke two franchise records. Montgomery is the first Lions player in franchise history to rush for a touchdown in each of his first five games of a season.

Also, Montgomery has rushed for a touchdown in eight straight games dating back to last season, and that is also a new franchise record.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter , Montgomery's aforementioned extension will keep him with the team through 2027, and it's a two-year pact worth $18.25 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.

Entering Week 6, Montgomery had rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns while also adding 16 catches for 117 yards. His first season in Detroit was very successful, as he broke the 1,000-yard mark despite splitting work and missing three games.

Along with second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Montgomery is one half of what is the best running back duo in the NFL. And, thankfully, the pair isn't going anywhere now that the Lions have locked Montgomery up for even longer.
