Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Makes Firm Statement on Mike McCarthy's Future

    By J.R. DeGroote,

The Dallas Cowboys suffered an embarrassing 47-9 defeat on Sunday, leaving many questioning Mike McCarthy's job security.

The Cowboys were outplayed in every facet of the game. The Lions coasted to the win in the second half and toyed with Dallas' defense, running multiple plays for offensive linemen.

McCarthy's squad was nearly doubled up in yardage, with the Lions piling up 492 yards — including 184 on the ground.

Dallas didn't find the end zone, settling for three field goals. Dak Prescott hit the bench in the fourth quarter, passing for just 178 yards and a pair of interceptions. The Cowboys managed just 53 rushing yards as a team.

After the matchup, Jones was asked about making a coaching change.

"I’m not considering that," Jones said in the locker room after the game.

McCarthy is entering the final year of his contract with the Cowboys, with no extension in sight despite three consecutive 12-win regular seasons. He has a 45-28 record overall during his five seasons in Dallas.

What continues to plague both McCarthy and the franchise is their inability to translate regular-season success into deep postseason runs.

The Cowboys were upset by the Green Bay Packers in the postseason last year, falling 48-32. Dallas has not advanced past the Divisional Round since 1995.

Dallas now heads into the bye week with more questions than answers.
