NBC airs wrong promo during Sunday Night Football

“Wakey, wakey. It’s Sunday morning football.” And this game already happened! Or so the commercial that aired during NBC’s Sunday Night Football broadcast between the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants should have said.

The sheer number of NFL International Series games can be hard for football fans to keep up with. But it seems that even the people in charge of inserting the advertisements for NBC are confused. Week 7 will be the third week in a row where the NFL will play a game in London, and the second week in a row that said game will feature the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Unfortunately for NBC, the ad they ran during Sunday night’s broadcast was for the Jaguars game that had already happened.

The Jaguars lost to the Chicago Bears 35-16 while it was still Sunday morning back here in the States, but London’s adopted team will be staying overseas another week to take on the New England Patriots in Week 7.

Given that next week’s showdown will be between two 1-5 teams that have looked dreadful so far this season, perhaps there was a level of wishful thinking in inserting the wrong ad. It might be hard to convince even the most hardcore NFL fan to wake up early to watch next week’s game. But the Chicago Bears with first overall pick Caleb Williams? That doesn’t sound bad.

The ad botch is a notable blunder for NBC. Other networks had been airing the correct ad featuring Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Patriots quarterback Drake Maye throughout the afternoon on Sunday, so this wasn’t a network-wide issue. And no matter how hard football fans may want to wish this game away, it’s still going to be played.

At least for fans stateside, they can get a few more hours of sleep next week instead of waking up early. British fans will have to wait another full year before another game comes their way. Hopefully for them, it’ll be a bit better than what they’re going to get next Sunday.
