In the 1990s, groundbreaking research through the Landmark Study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) highlighted the profound impact early negative experiences have on lifelong health, well-being, and social outcomes. For many, the findings were a wake-up call—showing that childhood adversity could contribute to a cycle of trauma that could echo through generations.

But with greater understanding came a hopeful message: adversity is a fact, but it is not fate.

Fast forward to today, and we now know that positive childhood experiences (PCEs) can serve as a powerful buffer against the effects of adversity.

Through continued research, particularly around seven key PCEs, we’ve learned how intentionally fostering these experiences can play a transformative role in breaking cycles of trauma and building resilience.

Bloom Kentucky is focused on driving statewide policy change to prevent and mitigate the impact of childhood adversity. The organization is dedicated to empowering families, schools, communities, and policymakers to recognize the transformative power of positive childhood experiences and take meaningful steps to support children across the Commonwealth. Through its campaign, Bloom Kentucky will highlight each of the seven PCEs and offer actionable strategies to integrate them into everyday life, helping to build a stronger, more resilient future for Kentucky’s youth.

The seven Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs):

    • The ability to talk with family about feelings.

    • The sense that family is supportive during difficult times.

    • The enjoyment of participation in community traditions.

    • Feeling a sense of belonging in high school.

    • Feeling supported by friends.

    • Having at least two non-parent adults who genuinely cared.

    • Feeling safe and protected by an adult in the home.

How you can help foster these experiences

In coming months, Bloom Kentucky will highlight how each PCE can be integrated into daily life. Whether you’re a parent, educator, community member, or mentor, there are simple yet powerful steps you can take to encourage these experiences. From creating safe spaces for conversations to actively participating in community events, everyone has a role in cultivating positive experiences for Kentucky’s youth.

Bloom Kentucky’s goal is to empower Kentuckians to be intentional about creating environments where children feel supported, safe, and valued. By engaging the community, the organization aims to ensure that the future of Kentucky is built on strong, resilient foundations of positivity, connection, and care.
