3 players Liverpool should sell in January as Darwin Nunez transfer decision made

Liverpool has put itself right in the mix for the Premier League title race this season and that could require further reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The Reds only signed Federico Chiesa as its sole outfield player during the summer but it was well documented that Arne Slot was keen on finding a new defensive midfielder - especially with Martin Zubimendi rejecting the club - while another defender has also been at the top of the priority list.

There have also been doubts over club-record signing Darwin Nunez's future after an underwhelming tenure at Anfield for the Uruguayan since his $109million (£85m/€100m) switch from Benfica in 2022 - yet it appears he may have been given one final chance to prove his worth this season.

However, Liverpool.com has identified two players whose Liverpool careers could be over as early as January, while another could be destined for a loan switch in order to get some valuable minutes in the bank. These departures could pave way for a stellar signing.

    Wataru Endo - sell

It's been a tough campaign so far for Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo , who has fallen down the pecking order under Slot after failing to convince the Dutchman he is the defensive midfielder he requires in his starting XI.

The Japanese international has managed just two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, totalling a paltry six minutes, and already appears as though he is surplus to requirements - even if he poses as a useful squad player to have during the next few months.

But despite insisting he wants to remain and fight for his place this season , it's looking increasingly likely that a January departure could be on the cards for the 31-year-old, allowing Liverpool to recoup some of the $21.2m (£16.2m/€19.4m) it paid for him last year rather than send him out on loan.

    Joe Gomez - sell

Another player who has become surplus to requirements and was linked with a summer exit is versatile defender Joe Gomez who, like Endo, has managed less than 10 minutes of Premier League action this term.

Despite being able to play anywhere across the back four, Gomez has been resigned to fourth-choice center-back under Slot and with plenty of suitors for his services, a permanent exit could be an option the Reds consider in the January transfer window.

Liverpool is believed to value Gomez at around $38-44m (£29-33m/€35–40m) and a sale in the New Year could help to fund a move for one of the club's top center-back targets as the club seek a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk .

    Tyler Morton - loan

Despite opting to keep young midfielder Tyler Morton during the summer, Liverpool could be willing to sanction a loan move for the 21-year-old in January once Harvey Elliott finally returns from injury.

Morton has spent the last two campaigns out on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City in the Championship but could benefit from gaining more regular minutes once more, having only made one appearance for Liverpool so far this season.

His departure would free up an extra space in midfield should Liverpool look to capitalize and sign a new No. 6 to ease the burden on Ryan Gravenberch's shoulders, while it would also allow the academy graduate to gain more regular first-team football.
