At Riley High School in South Bend, Damon Starns is more than just a standout football player and band member; he’s a testament to resilience and transformation. Described by staff as a model of communication, commitment, and leadership, Starns has faced significant challenges yet has emerged stronger, embodying the spirit of a true leader.

Reflecting on his journey, Starns acknowledges that he hasn't always made the right choices. “I just had to look at myself and tell myself I’m more of a leader than a follower,” he says, emphasizing his determination to succeed and graduate.

Starns’s turning point came during his sophomore year when he was shot in the chest—a life-altering moment that he now views as an eye-opener. “It was like God was telling me I got a second chance at life, so it’s like make it count,” he recalls. This pivotal experience shifted his perspective, steering him away from a path that could have led to further adversity.

Now, he dedicates his energy to positive outlets, thriving on the football field and in the school band, where he plays the snare drum. His commitment has not gone unnoticed. “He’s a big kid, a physical player, but a gentle giant off the field,” says Darrick Lee, head football coach at Riley High School. “It’s been nice to see him continue to transform into the player that he is and will become.”

Starns credits his success to the support of his mentors and teachers, who have played a vital role in his journey. “I just had so many teachers who are openhearted,” he expresses. “They talk to me one-on-one and are there to help me succeed.”

As he reflects on his past, Starns wishes he could tell his former self to simply be himself, embracing his true potential. His story serves as an inspiration not just to his peers but to anyone facing challenges, reminding us all of the power of second chances and the importance of community support.

With his eyes set on the future, Starns continues to make plays on the field and march to the beat of his own drum, embodying the belief that every setback can lead to a remarkable comeback.
