Say Goodbye to Fall Plants: Freeze Warning Hits West Michigan!

Freeze Warning issued for tonight as temperatures drop into the 20s and 30s. Dry weather persists with lake-effect showers near the coast.

Expect Freezing Temperatures and Some Lake-Effect Showers Along the Lakeshore

GRAND RAPIDS — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:31 AM on October 14, 2024.

Freeze Warning and Cold Temperatures Expected Across West Michigan Tonight

Residents of West Michigan should prepare for freezing temperatures tonight as a Freeze Warning has been issued for the region. Expect temperatures to drop into the upper 20s to low 30s, especially for areas inland. A few lake-effect showers could impact areas near the Lake Michigan shore, but the majority of the region will remain dry.

Dry and Cold Start to the Week

The 500 mb low pressure system bringing scattered showers to West Michigan is moving eastward, leading to drier conditions starting today. However, areas near the lakeshore may still see some lake-effect showers today and Tuesday, especially in regions south of Holland and northwest of Muskegon.

Most inland areas will stay dry, with partly cloudy skies developing by Tuesday.

    Freeze Warning Tonight

A Freeze Warning is in effect for much of West Michigan from midnight until 9 AM on Tuesday. With light winds and clear skies, temperatures are expected to plummet, potentially impacting any remaining sensitive vegetation. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to protect plants and outdoor items from frost damage. This will be the final frost/freeze alert of the fall season.

Midweek Frosts and Freeze Before Late Week Warmup

Cold temperatures will continue through the middle of the week, with another round of frost possible on Wednesday morning. By Thursday, however, a high-pressure system will bring a warm-up, with temperatures climbing back into the upper 60s to low 70s. This will provide excellent conditions for leaf peeping and outdoor activities as sunny skies are expected through the weekend.
