Driver arrested in deadly crash off Interstate 5 in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A woman was killed and a driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a crash off Interstate 5 in the Barrio Logan area Sunday night.

California Highway Patrol officials said a 2106 Kia Soul was traveling south on I-5 at around 9:10 p.m. when it veered off the roadway near the Imperial Avenue off-ramp.

The car tumbled down an embankment and an electrical box; CHP officials said the electrical box then hit a female pedestrian who was nearby.

Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, the unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to CHP officials, the Kia's driver — a 23-year-old woman from Chula Vista — was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The incident is being investigated by the CHP San Diego Area.
