LA woman is being dropped by her home insurer over an oak tree in her yard — the city says it’s protected and can’t be removed or damaged. Now she’s stuck, may never be able to sell her home

Value of the tree can exceed $100,000. Double that? Most people can’t afford the fine. But that isn’t the real issue here. Native oak trees act as ember catchers and protect the home. It makes no sense require a protected oak that further protects the structure to be cut done. The problem is the insurance underwriters have no expertise and do not understand the science behind zero to 5ft of clearance around the structure. They should be aligning with the science used by fare safe councils and Resource Conservation Districts. Different requirements by different insurers and different agencies are a huge issue for we the homeowners. My insurance company is cancelling my homeowners insurance because we patched the roof when we took out the chimney. Counter- intuitive! We lessened the risk!
