SEC Power Rankings: The top two teams in the league are set to collide

The SEC is proving to be as volatile as ever in 2024, but there’s been burnt orange consistency at the top for most of the season.

In the middle of the pack, however, things are just plain nuts.

1. Texas

There’s little doubt as to who No. 1 in the SEC is now that every team has gone through half a season. The question is, can Texas stay at the top?

2. Georgia

Georgia skirted past Mississippi State though not without issue. Teams can have down games, but even a down game for the Bulldogs nets 34 points. Georgia faces yet another tough test, and Texas hosts a top-five matchup in Austin for the first time since 2006.

3. Tennessee

It took some breaks and a lack of gumption from a Florida staff that’s probably on the way out, but Tennessee improved to 5-1 and 2-1 in conference. Their next opponent is a big one.

4. Alabama

And it’s the Tide. Alabama needed the ball to bounce the right way for them to escape with a win at home against South Carolina. Kalen DeBoer’s team can look like world beaters on one series then can be undressed on the next. The lack of consistency may keep them out of Atlanta contention.

5. LSU

Garrett Nussmeier deserves a lot of credit for overcoming what was a pretty poor game from him to deliver the game-tying and then game-winning scores late against Ole Miss. Tiger Stadium at night is an impossible place to win under Brian Kelly.

6. Texas A&M

Didn’t play, moved up. Whoop.

7. Ole Miss

All those “Last Dance” comparisons that came from Rebel land proved to be unnecessary. Jaxson Dart was understandably distraught after the game in Baton Rouge, likely because he realized that the team that so many Ole Miss people poured real money into may not compete for the SEC championship. Ole Miss’ playoff margins are now razor, razor thin.

8. Missouri

Still looking for why they played UMass in October.

9. Arkansas

The Hogs are looking more and more formidable as the season goes along. What may have been expected from Kentucky this year looks to actually be coming from the Razorback program. John Calipari effect?

10. Vanderbilt

Speaking of Kentucky, Vanderbilt sent yet another program into a state of chaos on Saturday. Gutting out a 20-13 win in Lexington has Vanderbilt 4-2 and 2-1 in SEC play. Can the Commodores find two more wins out of the next six games? Ball State, Texas, Auburn, South Carolina, LSU, and Tennessee.
