A powerful song for parents trying to protect their children from the demons they faced themselves. Jelly Roll released his new album Beautifully Broken this past Friday, and the whole album is a powerful reflection on the struggles he's been through in his life, from addiction to his relationship with God. But the song that seems to be hitting home for a lot of people is "My Cross." The penultimate song on the album, "My Cross" is a powerful prayer that most parents pray, hoping that their children are able to avoid the problems and demons that they've faced themselves: "I hope to God you don't get my addictions Don't deal with my demons or make my decisions Yeah, I hope the apple falls far from the tree And the sins of the father stop right here with me
'Cause that's my cross to carry, my scars to heal My pain to bury, not yours to feel I pray every day I can love you enough So my cross to carry won't be yours to pick up" Written by Jelly Roll himself along with Ryan Vojtesak, Ilsey Juber, Joe Reeves, Geoff Warburton and Joe Fox, the song has clearly struck a nerve with parents on social media who can relate to the vulnerable prayer of a parent hoping their children can break a cycle of trauma:
@so_that_happened Dear @Jelly Roll, this album is healing parts of me that have been broken for so long. Thank you for this beautiful song that expresses how i feel about my past and my children. #traumahealing #cptsd #traumatok #healingjourney #healingtiktok #recovery #jellyroll @Caidence Swain @Bunnie Xo 🪄 ♬ My Cross - Jelly Roll
It's no doubt a song that will touch a lot of parents who wake up every day afraid that they'll pass on their demons to their children. And it's a fear that Jelly Roll has spoke openly about, especially as he advocates for more to be done about the fentanyl epidemic that's ruining so many lives across our country. The singer recently testified in front of Congress on the need for action, including powerful testimony on the effect drugs continue to have on his own family: “I have a 15 year old daughter whose mother is a drug addict. Every day I get to look in the eyes of a victim in my household of the effects of drugs. Every single day. And every single day I have to wonder...if today will be the day that I have to tell my daughter that her mother became part of the national statistic.” And during an interview with People , he discussed his fear as a father about his children experimenting with drugs: “We’ve seen crack. We’ve seen cocaine. We’ve seen opioids. But we’ve never seen something that is so deadly in such small amounts that’s being mixed in so many different things.” He admits, it’s terrifying for a father knowing that one mistake is costing so many young people their lives – a mistake that so many people were able to make in the past with far less deadly consequences:
“It scares me for my daughter. It scares me for my son. It scares me for this next generation. We’ve never seen nothing like fentanyl.” Of course the song "My Cross" is a prayer that will resonate with parents who have dealt not just with addiction but with abuse, trauma and other demons that they hope to keep from their children. It's a powerful song, and one that's clearly touching the hearts of parents everywhere as they listen and pray the same prayer for their children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQHYXBwKnpk
