Governor Newsom Proclaims Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2024, Decries the Injustices of the Past

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed October 14, 2024, as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” marking the sixth consecutive year California recognizes this significant observance. The proclamation honors the rich cultural diversity and resilience of Indigenous peoples in California, acknowledging those with deep-rooted ties to the land as well as those who were relocated or have journeyed from afar in search of stability and community.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom highlighted the ongoing efforts to address the historical injustices and environmental challenges faced by Indigenous communities. He pointed out that California is embracing Indigenous wisdom in efforts to restore ecological balance, as seen in recent initiatives like the Klamath Basin tribes’ successful completion of the largest dam removal project in U.S. history. Additionally, the state is focused on enhancing Indigenous language revitalization, promoting Indigenous arts, and recognizing the importance of governance infused with Indigenous values.

It’s the past. Was it wrong? Of course. Why beat a dead horse.
