The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in the nation following Week 7 of the 2024 college football season.

College football analysts, national media networks and fans spent a large portion of the offseason debating how Texas would stack up against SEC opponents in its first year in the league. Were the Longhorns prepared to compete in a superior conference?

Turns out Steve Sarkisian's squad is more than ready.

After Texas' 34-3 over Oklahoma in Week 7, the Longhorns already made history in the SEC . Texas became the first program in the conference to score 250+ points on offense and allow fewer than 40 points on defense through the first six games of the season.

Texas' closest game this season came against Michigan in Week 2. Texas stormed into Ann Arbor and defeated the reigning national champions by 19 points. Three other victories were by at least 48 points.

The Longhorns first SEC meeting came against Mississippi State in Week 5 and the Bulldogs put up 13 points on Texas' defense, the most of any team this year.

Many expected the Longhorns to have a high powered offense this season, but I'm not sure the majority expected Texas' defense to be as dominate as it has been through the first six games. Texas is the No. 1 team in the country in total defense giving up 229.7 yards per game and also the No. 1 scoring defense in the country giving up 6.3 points per game.

Texas faces one of the best SEC teams, No. 5 Georgia, in Austin on Oct. 19 to once again prove they're ready to compete on the biggest stage.
