<body><div> It took a little over 48 hours for a Colin Cowherd take on <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/" rel="nofollow"> San Francisco 49ers </a> quarterback Brock Purdy to age like fine milk left in an overheating car. On Friday, the Fox Sports talking head confidently declared Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is better than Purdy.&nbsp;Cowherd and co-host Jason McIntyre played a quick game of “ <a href="https://x.com/TheHerd/status/1844804362381807782" rel="nofollow"> Better than Brock? </a> ” in the wake of Purdy’s three-touchdown performance against Seattle on Thursday. McIntyre listed quarterbacks around the league while Cowherd — who once wrote off Purdy after the quarterback <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/colin-cowherd-brock-purdy-backwards-hat-nonsense-18527501.php" rel="nofollow"> wore his hat backwards </a> during a press conference — determined if they were better than Purdy. Cowherd’s assessment when it came to the Denver rookie befuddled his co-host, who couldn’t even hold in his laughter while reading Nix’s name. “Slightly,” Cowherd said, in response to whether Nix is better than Purdy. “Wait, what?” McIntyre exclaimed while bursting into more laughter. “He’s a more accurate thrower collegiately,” Cowherd said. “I think Bo Nix is — by the way he’s starting to settle in. He didn’t inherit all these [George] Kittle, Deebo [Samuel], [Brandon] Aiyuk and all these wonderful toys to play with. He’s basically got Courtland Sutton and cross your fingers. Bo Nix is on a heater and, again, C.J. Stroud and Bo Nix, they have the responsibility to rebuild a team. They don’t get the luxury seating they want.” When McIntyre asked to clarify Cowherd’s answer to the original question — whether Nix individually is a better quarterback than Purdy — the Fox Sports talking head replied with a more emphatic, “Yes, yes.” Cowherd’s argument is questionable at best, between the useless comparison of talent at the college level for two players in the pros and the <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/brock-purdy-discourse-continues-super-bowl-18635161.php" rel="nofollow"> cliche argument </a> that Purdy’s success was handed to him on a silver platter via the Niners’ personnel. What’s more coherent would be a head-to-head comparison of each player’s performance this past week. While Purdy did not play Sunday, Nix certainly did. A cursory glance at the Broncos-Chargers box score might make it seem like he played a decent game — though certainly not better than the 255-yard, three-touchdown night&nbsp;Purdy had on Thursday — but the final numbers are actually inflated. Through three quarters, the Denver offense put together five punts, an interception, a fumble and zero points. The two touchdowns Nix threw — one of which came at the end of a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPZrrW0XcGU" rel="nofollow"> miraculous Sutton catch </a> — along with 189 of his 216 passing yards, all came in the fourth quarter, which the Broncos began down 23-0. It’s certainly impressive to do all that in a single 15-minute period at the NFL level, but the fourth was ostensibly garbage time. In league history, there have been <a href="https://stathead.com/tiny/4eDwX" rel="nofollow"> 1,773 instances </a> of one team holding a 23-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The leading team has <a href="https://stathead.com/tiny/5JZzT" rel="nofollow"> won 1,770 of those games </a> ; the last blown lead happened&nbsp;at the turn of the century. There are also direct statistical comparisons that can be made between the two quarterbacks. Purdy is second in the NFL in passing yards, Nix is 22nd. Purdy is tied for fifth in touchdowns, Nix is tied for 25th. Purdy is 10th in passer rating, Nix is 30th. Purdy’s completion percentage over expected is second, Nix’s is 29th. Purdy’s EPA is third. Nix’s is, once again, 29th. The list goes on and on. Now, it's totally possible that Nix&nbsp;could end up with a decent career in the NFL. He’s shown flashes of brilliance, for instance, when <a href="https://broncoswire.usatoday.com/2024/10/14/nfl-highlights-bo-nix-houdini-play-escpaing-sack-vs-chargers/" rel="nofollow"> escaping the pocket, </a> which was a common scenario he found himself in Sunday as the Broncos were <a href="https://www.chargers.com/news/week-6-injury-report-chargers-at-broncos-justin-herbert-joey-bosa" rel="nofollow"> missing </a> their starting center and right tackle. However, he’s quite not there yet even within his own draft class, let alone compared to a Super Bowl quarterback in Purdy.
