Diddy’s Mother Told Him His Father Died in an Automobile Accident, But He Found Out the Truth

Many skeletons in Diddy's closet are creeping up into the light after being arrested on a series of charges.

The part of Sean Combs’ story that raises the most eyebrows goes way back to his youth surrounding the mysterious death of his dad.

Melvin Earl Combs, Diddy’s father, dealt drugs in Harlem during the peak of the 1970’s opioid epidemic. According to Find A Grave, he moved within the same group as Frank Lucas, a well-known gangster who was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the movie 'American Gangster.'

When Sean was only three years of age, his dad died in a deadly shoot-out after reportedly being mistaken for a police informant. Janice Combs, Diddy’s mom, tried to protect the young boy from the tough reality of his dad's life and told him that he’d died in an automobile accident. 

However, even in his youth, Sean felt that something wasn’t right about his mom’s story. Later on, he talked about his suspicions in an O, The Oprah Magazine interview. He said even as a kid, he put two and two together. He added that he noticed that people from the streets always knew his family's last name. They would tell him ‘I used to run with your father. All of my uncles were also street hustlers.’

Diddy’s journey to understand what actually happened to his dad took him over to the Washington, DC Founders Library. In a Howard University speech in May of 2014, Diddy recalled the time he pieced everything together. He said his mom always told him that his father died in an automobile accident. However, something about the story felt off. Something in his soul was telling him otherwise.

Diddy sifted through old newspapers using the library’s microfilm and came across a damning report regarding his dad in the Amsterdam News. When he typed in his dad’s name and the date he died, he read in the news that he’d been killed in a drug deal that had gone bad. There in the library, he realized there isn’t anything greater than a mother’s love who has the need to protect her son, he recalled.

Janice stands by Diddy amid all of the chaos

Even with all of the controversy surrounding Sean's arrest, his mother is sticking by him.
