does it really matter? He was an explorer and supported by the Spanish monarchy sailed into uncharted territory. It took courage. Remember that because of the Inquisition many Jews were forced to flee or hide their religion. So, whether he was a Jew in hiding, a Jew free to practice his religion, his mission was a courageous one- regardless of WHAT he discovered. The sad truth is that the Spaniards brought with them terrible diseases for which the indigenous population had no immunity. Further more, the Spaniards, including Columbus, enslaved and killed the indigenous population.
