Starting January 2024, California will implement the Intersection Daylighting Law, a significant initiative designed to improve safety at crosswalks by prohibiting parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk. This regulation applies regardless of the presence of signs or curb markings, reinforcing the state’s commitment to pedestrian safety.

While enforcement of citations for violations will not begin until January 1, 2025, California officials encourage drivers to adopt this practice immediately. Maintaining at least 20 feet of clearance—roughly the length of one large car—between parked vehicles and crosswalks can significantly enhance visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

The primary objective of this law is to reduce the risk of accidents at intersections, where parked vehicles can obstruct the view of pedestrians and drivers alike. With improved visibility, pedestrians can better assess oncoming traffic before stepping into the street, while drivers can spot pedestrians more easily, reducing the likelihood of severe injuries or fatal collisions.

The concept of intersection daylighting is already being practiced in various forms across the country, with similar laws existing in 40 other states. In California, Assembly Bill 413, known as the “daylighting” law, was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2023, sponsored by Fremont’s State Assembly representative, Alex Lee. The law specifically prohibits stopping, standing, or parking within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of any crosswalk, and within 15 feet where curb extensions are present.
