A popular food product distributed around the country has been recalled over the risk it poses for causing potentially fatal infections.

Enoki King Mushroom Farm issued a recall of its 5.3-ounce packages of Enoki Mushroom due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes following routine testing by the Maryland State Department of Health that discovered the presence of the bacteria, according to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration .

Listeria monocytogenes is the bacteria that can cause listeria, leading to "serious and sometimes fatal infections" that can cause severe illness in high-risk groups like children, the elderly, those who are pregnant and persons with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea.

The recalled product was distributed nationwide and packaged in a clear plastic wrapping featuring the affected lot code 4877 on the front and UPC code 860011505600 on the back.

As of October 11, there have been no reports of illness associated with the recall and distribution has been suspended. Consumers are urged to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
