Northern California Weather: Cooler conditions, potential for fire starts lingers across region

The National Weather Service in Sacramento reports that near-normal temperatures, light winds, and dry conditions will persist through early this week. However, a shift in weather patterns is expected midweek, bringing cooler temperatures and chances for light precipitation, alongside elevated fire weather concerns.

Upper-level ridging will keep Valley highs in the 80s and slightly above normal temperatures through Tuesday, with mostly clear skies anticipated. A significant trough from the Gulf of Alaska is expected to arrive Wednesday, increasing the likelihood of light rain across the region. Forecast rainfall amounts for the Valley are expected to be around a tenth of an inch or less, while mountainous areas may see slightly more, with a 30% to 60% chance of light rain.

A second, colder shortwave will pass through on Thursday, potentially dropping snow levels to around 6,000 feet, with higher elevations possibly receiving up to an inch.

The most pressing concern with the incoming weather systems is the potential for gusty northerly winds and low humidity levels, particularly from Thursday through Saturday. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the Valley and Delta regions from 11 AM Thursday to 8 PM Saturday, with gusts expected to reach up to 40 mph in some areas. Residents are advised to stay alert for fire weather conditions as the region transitions to a late-fall weather pattern.
