Lake effect rain showers to bring over an inch of rain to Michigan’s Thumb region today. Freeze potential tonight with temperatures near freezing.

Lake Effect Showers Bring Heavy Rain and Frost to Michigan’s Thumb

Detroit, MI — Issued by the National Weather Service at 5:35 AM EDT on October 15, 2024.

Rain showers will continue to drench Michigan’s Thumb today as Lake Huron sends moisture inland. Areas along the shoreline can expect an additional 1 to 1.5 inches of rainfall before the showers taper off later this evening. This heavy rain is the result of cool northerly winds sweeping across the lake, which has persisted since yesterday.

Rainfall Totals Expected to Rise in Michigan's Thumb

A combination of lake effect showers and a cold wave moving south from Ontario will drive precipitation throughout the day, primarily affecting northern and eastern Thumb regions. Rainfall is expected to be heaviest in the shoreline areas, with localized totals reaching up to 1.5 inches. These lake-driven rain showers will gradually diminish late tonight as winds shift more northwesterly.

In addition to the wet weather, strong wind gusts of 30-35 mph, with some areas possibly reaching 40 mph, will develop later this afternoon across the Thumb.

    Frost and Freeze Warnings Tonight

With rain tapering off overnight, clear skies will bring the potential for frost and freezing temperatures across much of southeast Michigan. Residents in inland and rural areas should take precautions for frost development, as temperatures will approach freezing. The coldest night of the week is expected tomorrow, with low temperatures dipping into the upper 20s in northern Michigan and low 30s in Detroit.

Warming Trend Expected Later This Week

After this midweek cold spell, the region will experience a warming trend as high pressure moves in, bringing dry weather and daytime highs near 70°F by the weekend. As the high pressure establishes itself, expect a break from the rain and chilly conditions starting Thursday.

Today's Forecast and What to Expect Tomorrow

    • Today: Heavy lake effect showers in the Thumb. High near 50°F. Gusty winds up to 40 mph along the shoreline.
    • Tonight: Showers ending. Frost and freezing temperatures with lows around 30°F.
    • Wednesday: Clearing skies and highs in the low 50s. Frost expected again at night.
