Oliver Baumann has a slight edge over Alexander Nübel when it comes to the national team goalkeeper position in the absence of injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has said.

VfB Stuttgart's Nübel earned his maiden cap in Friday's 2-1 victory in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Hoffenheim's Baumann debuted at long last on Monday when Germany beat the Netherlands 1-0.

Nagelsmann said he was pleased that the pressure was off now that both had performed well in the place of ter Stegen who is out for many months with a severe knee injury.

Baumann's debut was a little more impressive because he made a huge late save against Donyell Malen's swerving shot to preserve the victory. Nagelsmann gave him top marks and said that the 34-year-old was also ahead overall.

"Olli is marginally stronger than Alex this season," he said. But he added: "I'm not a clairvoyant and I don't know how their performance will continue in the coming weeks."

Baumann was celebrated by the team in the dressing room and delighted to have finally played after more than 20 call-ups in the past four years, mostly as third choice behind now retired Manuel Neuer and ter Stegen.

"The day couldn't have been more perfect. It's a dream come true and I'm just extremely proud to have played for our country. I'm very grateful for that," he said.
