Commanders' Dan Quinn Reveals Jayden Daniels Secret

The Washington Commanders may have lost 30-23 to the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium, but it was another game in which Jayden Daniels improved as a passer.

Much has been made of Daniels, the runner this season, but over the last couple of weeks, his improvement as a passer has excited fans.

And against the Ravens, Daniels again showed that his development as a passer is trending upward, but not in the manner fans might have thought.

Head coach Dan Quinn revealed it was something some might not have noticed.

“This would sound unusual, but throwaways,” Quinn said . “An instance where there wasn't much time left at the end of the half, was a one outside to Austin [Ekeler] where it wouldn't have made much of a play, and the better play, it's incomplete to go fight for another one. We still had a timeout that we could use, so the football intelligence that he brings into the position is really strong. But I love the fact that when he's in these spaces, we had to go score and get down the field. The decision-making there, he did a really good job of taking care of the ball, [made] the right decisions, I thought some of the best rips of his season actually happened yesterday.”

So while Daniels has been improving as a passer over the last fortnight, with a deep shot to Terry McLaurin in the win over the Cleveland Browns a highlight, now it is more about Jayden's situational awareness that is catching the coaching group's eye.

Of course, being a rookie, Daniels won't always make the right decision. In fact, even veterans don't, but having the awareness to throw the football away because it is the "smarter" player rather than a small completion for minimal gain shows Daniels is on the right track.

It might only be six weeks into Year 1, but the No. 2 overall pick is already showing the type of improvement that franchises crave from their young quarterbacks.
