    NASA scientists have constantly discovered astonishing things about the universe, the Big Bang, and dark matter. However, they found that Earth's core might have been leaking, raising concerns about the planet's stability and life. Recent studies published in the journal Nature highlighted the planet's peculiar behavior, thereby offering valuable insights into its structure and formations. The leakage from Earth's core layer worried scientists, as it was unexpected to find water seeping from the surface. They delved deeper into this discovery to uncover the reasons behind this mysterious leak.

    Understanding the Groundbreaking Discovery

    The team from the California Institute of Technology found high amounts of two types of helium, helium-3 and helium-4, in ancient rocks from Baffin Island, Canada. This further suggested that there might have been a slow leakage in Earth's core, indicating a gradual movement from the core to the surface. Forrest Horton, an associate scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution explained to CNN in an email, "Helium-3 was rare on Earth because it had not been produced in or added to the planet in significant quantities, and it was lost to space. As Earth’s rocky portion stirred and convected like hot water on a stovetop, material ascended, cooled, and sank."

    Tracing Helium's Unexpected Entry

    Knewz.com noted that as per scientists' suggestions when Earth formed from a dust cloud, helium might have been trapped in its core. However, over time, helium-3 slowly leaked from the core, ascending through the mantle with magma. Horton further explained the issue to CNN , "The lavas were about 60 million years old, and the ascent of the mantle plume took perhaps tens of millions of years. So, the helium measured in these rocks would have escaped the core perhaps 100 million years ago or possibly much earlier." Scientists were also looking for other evidence to support the outer core's low density.

    Could This Leakage Affect Earth?

    The leakage of minerals from the core could have led to an increase in the concentration of certain important minerals in the crust and mantle, which could have been utilized by mankind. There might have even been an impact on Earth's carbon and water cycles, which scientists were still studying . According to VICE , Jie Deng, a geophysicist at Princeton University, said, "MgO exsolution, along with other core exsolution, were significant core-mantle mass interaction mechanisms. The chemical exchange between the core and mantle could have had profound effects on the long-term evolution of the mantle and Earth as a whole."

    Future research opportunities

    Given that Earth’s core had very high temperatures, with the outer core alone ranging from 4,000 degrees Celsius to 6,000 degrees Celsius, scientists struggled to decode it. Forest Horton, a geochemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, told VICE , 'We knew very little about Earth's core, other than that it exists. This made studying the core both intriguing and frustrating." This discovery of the elements leaking from the core held tremendous importance for geochemists, as they could then conduct further research to understand the nature of the core and its potential impacts on Earth’s future.
