Tables turn on Steelers after latest Russell Wilson decision and Davante Adams trade news

The Pittsburgh Steelers are (4-2), but that isn't stopping Mike Tomlin from considering a quarterback change as the team heads into its Week 7 matchup against the New York Jets (2-4).

Tomlin said Tuesday that Russell Wilson will share first-team reps with Justin Fields this week now that he's fully healthy. Tomlin hasn't committed to either quarterback, one way or the other, and even said he could play both guys.

"It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what Justin has done or has not done," Tomlin told reporters after he was asked why he's considering starting Wilson. "Justin has been an asset to us. Man last week, for example, his ability to utilize his legs, by design and by ad-lib, was a significant component of that game, he rushed for 50 plus yards and two touchdowns in the game. We're appreciative of that. We're appreciative of taking care of the ball, but we're just looking at all the people at our disposal the same way that we do at any position, with who we have a history with."

It's an odd decision. Fields has been playing well, as Tomlin noted above and his legs give the Steelers offense something that Wilson can't provide: mobility. Sure, Wilson is the most accomplished of the two, but none of that matters if you've watched the guy play football the last couple of years. It's clear he's on the decline, while Fields is in his prime and also has a much higher ceiling. Hell, he probably even has a safer floor, at this point.

That decision, on top of the Davante Adams trade to the Jets, has completely flipped the tables on the Steelers entering Week 7. Before all the news broke, they were -1.5 favorites to win on Sunday Night Football. Now, they're 1.5-point underdogs, projected to lose.

The quarterback position has been in flux, to say the least, ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired a few years ago. Unfortunately, for the Steelers, it looks like it will be much of the same for the rest of the 2024 season. Unless Wilson just balls out, which is doubtful at best, at this point.
