Cowboys trade proposal ships former No. 3 overall pick to AFC East

The Dallas Cowboys have not lived up to expectations so far. They could make some moves at the trade deadline to get back on track or even set themselves up for the future.

While predicting trades teams could make, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin proposed this trade that sends Trey Lance to the Miami Dolphins:

    • Cowboys receive: Conditional 2025 fifth-round pick
    • Dolphins receive: Trey Lance

"Tua Tagovailoa is apparently on track to return to the field this season, despite some medical experts suggesting his concussion history should prompt retirement consideration," wrote Benjamin. "Since when has Miami succeeded at putting all its eggs in the Tua basket, however? Lance remains a project, but he flashed his first-round athleticism under Mike McDaniel in San Francisco, and Dallas has kept him strapped to the bench. He'd make for a low-risk, high-upside rental as added Tagovailoa insurance."

Lance was once supposed to be the future of the San Francisco 49ers. The team drafted him as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. As a rookie, he did not see the field as much as Jimmy Garoppolo was the quarterback. In his second year, he was named the starter but suffered an injury that eventually made way for Brock Purdy to shine.

Before his third season, the Cowboys traded for Lance in exchange for a fourth-round pick. With Dak Prescott locked up long-term and Cooper Rush as the backup, Lance is the odd man out. He has a history with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel who was the 49ers offensive coordinator in Lance's rookie year.

Grier waited to long to find a QB. You and Mc Daniel put all your stock in Tua and when healthy Tua is what Miami needs but when Tua went down in week 2 knowing he'd be out at 4-6 weeks and knowing Thompson was sub par Grier should have went and tried to get veteran like even Flacco. Grier Mc Daniel and you too Ross need to go. Your decisions are not good for Miami
