The city of Atlanta is getting yet another Super Bowl.

During the first day of the NFL's Fall League Meeting, which happened to be in Atlanta, it was determined that Mercedes-Benz Stadium - home of the Falcons - will host Super Bowl LXII (62) in 2028.

Here's what NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had to say about the Super Bowl returning to Atlanta.

"Renowned for its hospitality and rich sports and entertainment culture, Atlanta is a world-class event destination and a natural fit for Super Bowl 62," Goodell said. "Arthur Blank has been a transformative figure in the Atlanta community, playing a crucial role in leading the bid to bring the Super Bowl back to the city. I have been fortunate to witness firsthand how Arthur continues to drive community engagement and economic development in the Atlanta community through his unwavering commitment to sports and philanthropy. We look forward to working with him, the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Sports Council and all of our partners on the ground to create an unforgettable experience for fans around the world in 2028."

Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank also released a statement.

"This is a tremendous honor for the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia to be selected as host for Super Bowl LXII," Blank said. "Thank you to my fellow owners for their trust in awarding Atlanta this opportunity, and thank you to Commissioner Goodell, Peter O'Reilly and the entire league for their continued leadership in making the NFL the greatest sports league in the world. Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world's largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honored to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl LIII in 2019. I look forward to working alongside our city and state officials as we continue to elevate Georgia as a premier, global sports destination."

This is the fourth time Atlanta has been awarded the big game, and the second for Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The previous was Super Bowl 53 in 2019, featuring the New England Patriots against the Los Angeles Rams. It was one of the least entertaining Super Bowls in recent memory, with the Patriots winning a low scoring 13-3 contest.

Before that, Atlanta hosted Super Bowls 28 (1993) and 34 (1999) in the old Georgia Dome, which was demolished in 2017. Super Bowl 28 pitted the Dallas Cowboys against the Buffalo Bills, which the Cowboys won in a 30-13 blowout. Super Bowl 34 came down to the wire between the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans.

The Rams merged victorious 23-16 after Titans wide receiver Kevin Dyson was tackled just one yard shy of the goal line with no time remaining, which would have put Tennessee just an extra point away from sending the game into overtime or set them up for a game-winning two-point conversion.

The city of Atlanta will hope for Super Bowl 62 to be more like Super Bowl 34. It will also hope for the hometown Falcons to play in the game. In the NFL, four years is a long time and a lot can change. Ideally for Falcons fans, 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. will be leading the way as their franchise quarterback.
