49ers Urged To Sign Two-Time Super Bowl Winning RB Amid Jordan Mason Injury Update

The San Francisco 49ers enter their Week 7 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs with concerning injuries in the backfield. Star running back Christian McCaffrey has yet to play a snap this season as he battles Achilles issues.

Jordan Mason has been a reliable runner with McCaffrey out, but the third-year running back suffered a shoulder injury in the 49ers' 36-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mason is considered day-to-day with an AC joint sprain.

Bleacher Report has a free agent in mind that could give the 49ers a boost to their backfield as they try to get McCaffrey and Mason healthy for a postseason run. BR floated the idea of the 49ers reuniting with Jerick McKinnon.

"Jordan Mason avoided a major injury but is still considered "day-to-day" after hurting his shoulder against the Seahawks. So, especially with Christian McCaffery still on injured reserve, it might make sense for the 49ers to add another veteran running back just in case Mason has to miss time.

McKinnon spent three years with the club from 2018 to 2020 and those didn't go well because of injuries, but he should have familiarity with the system. Plus, the 32-year-old can catch passes out of the backfield which is something the offense is missing with McCaffery sidelined."

McKinnon would bring immediate relief to the 49ers, as the No. 96 pick in the 2014 draft is familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.

Players who joined the 49ers might be familiar with McKinnon as well. The former Georgia Southern standout played on the Kansas City Chiefs from 2021-23 and helped the Chiefs defeat San Francisco in Super Bowl 58. He caught two passes for 15 yards in the win.

McKinnon has rushed 660 times for 2,650 yards and 14 touchdowns in his eight seasons in the league. He's recorded 269 receptions for 2,048 yards and 20 touchdowns in that span.

I got the sense that there was a bad blood between McKinnon and the 9ers. He was on the Debo pod cast in 2020 when asked if he would return to the 49ers, he said "he'll no".
