Tom Brady faces 6 strict new rules at FOX Sports after Las Vegas Raiders deal completed

Tom Brady’s bid to become a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders has been approved by a majority of NFL owners - though now he is subject to six rules that could limit his effectiveness as an analyst for FOX Sports.

On Tuesday, it was announced Brady and his business partner Tom Wagner’s bid for a 10 percent stake in the Raiders had been approved. For Brady and Wagner’s bid to be allowed, 24 of the 32 owners in the league had to give the go-ahead for the purchase, which was all but a formality at this point in the process.

As such, Tuesday’s ruling also brought an end to Brady’s playing career as it is stipulated by the NFL that a player cannot acquire equity in a team. With his playing career fully over, Brady will have more time to focus on being an analyst for FOX Sports, though even that will have some limitations now that he is an owner of the Raiders.

In late August, it was revealed that Brady would have to abide by a specific set of rules that pertain only to him. During the NFL’s meetings in Minneapolis, owners were shown a presentation of new rules, with a slide - called the “Brady - Broadcast Restrictions” - dedicated to what Brady can and cannot do.

Now, it has been confirmed that there are six rules the seven-time Super Bowl champion must follow as he continues balancing his duties for FOX and the Raiders. Of those six rules, three are most consequential for the dual duties he is trying to accomplish this season.

Because Brady is now an owner - regardless of size - of the Raiders, he will not be allowed entry to another team’s facility. Additionally, he will not be allowed to watch practice or attend FOX’s production meetings in any capacity.

Those three are the most important as they are what allow a broadcast team to have important insight on the teams that they are covering, which they then convey to the fans watching the game. In this instance, Brady will be losing out on a crucial component of what makes each broadcast unique and interesting for fans.

And while it might seem like it would be very difficult for Brady to do his job with FOX Sports effectively, there is a potential loophole that the 47-year-old could utilize. While Brady himself cannot attend the meetings, his production team is still allowed to attend, allowing him to get information otherwise unable to him.

Along with the rules as mentioned earlier, Brady will not be allowed to publicly criticize referees and other clubs, now that he is an owner. He also will be subject to the NFL’s gambling policy and the anti-tampering policy.

Even with the rules, Tuesday marks a momentous occasion for the NFL legend. It marked the second he obtained ownership of a Las Vegas franchise, having been brought on by Davis as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Aces in 2022.

At the time of his purchase, Brady explained what it meant to him to own a basketball team, even if it were just a minority stake. “I am very excited to be part of the Las Vegas Aces organization,” Brady said at the time. “My love for women’s sports began at a young age when I would tag along to all my older sisters’ games. They were by far the best athletes in our house!”
