The struggles of the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys thus far this season were predictably two of the biggest talking points on the majority of sports talk shows on Tuesday. And perhaps the most harsh critique across the sports media world came from Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser on Tuesday’s edition of Pardon The Interruption .
The past two days have featured a wide range of emotions for Jets’ fans. Despite looking quite sharp offensively unlike most games this season, costly penalties and several miscues on special teams ultimately led to the Buffalo Bills coming away with a 23-20 victory Monday.
Sitting at 2-4 on the season after the loss, the Jets decided that a big change was needed to shake things up, reuniting Las Vegas Raiders star receiver Davante Adams with his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, in a trade on Tuesday.
While some seemingly believe that the acquisition of Adams will turn the Jets into the contender many expected coming into the season, Michael Wilbon offered a far more pessimistic opinion of the move.
“I know that there are many people at this network that think the acquisition of Davante Adams is like getting Jerry Rice in 1984,” said Wilbon. “I’m not going that far. Last night, might he have made a difference? He might have, but he might not have because you’ve got penalties, you’ve got mistakes. The Jets aren’t as good as they, or all of their slurpers, think they are.
“They are okay. And they can recover. And yes, they can make the playoffs because their schedule is cream pie. It is nothing, the Jets’ schedule.
“There are some teams like mine, the Bears, who have a tough schedule from here on out. The Jets have got homecoming opponents from here on out. Starting in division with Miami and New England. The Jets should be fine, even without Davante Adams. He should help them. But is he a savior? No.”
Meanwhile, it was Tony Kornheiser who handled the task of tearing apart the Cowboys later on in the same segment, who have similarly been disappointing and are coming off their worst loss of the season in an embarrassing 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 6.
“So, we talked about the Jets a lot on this show,” said Kornheiser. “We don’t talk as much about the Jets as we do, or other shows do, about the Cowboys. Which is now an irrelevant franchise. But we talk a lot about the Jets. The Cowboys are irrelevant right now.”
To call the Cowboys irrelevant may be a bit of a stretch considering their blowout loss to the Lions has been a huge talking point amongst media members. The New Orleans Saints were also blown out in Week 6, but nearly no one is talking about that on a national level.
However, in terms of looking like a true contender, neither the Cowboys nor the Jets are even included in that discussion at this point. And clearly, Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser aren’t all that interested in really breaking down either team’s struggles on the year to the level that other shows on ESPN have thus far this week.
