Brent Venables Has No Clue What To Do With Jackson Arnold

Last week, it was announced that Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables benched quarterback Jackson Arnold . Anyone with a pulse knew that he was throwing Arnold under the bus for the mess of a program Oklahoma is, which he should be ashamed of. Well, today he proved he has no clue what to do with Arnold entirely, as it came out he considered redshirting him for the rest of the season.

“It’s been discussed between us,” Venables said Tuesday morning. “What was told to Jackson is if we put you in, it’s because we need you to help us go win. We’re certainly sensitive to everything. We’re not sitting here with our head in the sand or naive to what it is. But man, he’s a great teammate. He wants to be the starting quarterback at the University of Oklahoma.”

What’s even more embarrassing for Venables is that he really thought rolling out true freshman Michael Hawkins for the Red River Rivalry against Texas. Hawkins looked terrible Saturday, as you can find in Trey’s stock notes from this past weekend. After the Texas game, Venables tripled down by saying he never thought about making a switch back to Arnold.

“I feel that it’s only right to give Mike the opportunity to be the quarterback and to have a body of work that says he either is or isn’t the right guy,” Venables said. “Will he learn from his past mistakes? Every week is a season of its own, as we know. Every opponent is going to present different issues and problems.”

“Jackson’s been fantastic all things considered,” Venables continued on Arnold. “He’s taken it in a really tough-minded way. And he’s ready to play. And if he wasn’t he wouldn’t still be here every day.”

It’s clear that Arnold deserves better than playing for a bonehead like Brent Venables. Arnold is a former Elite11 winner with tremendous upside, and to stymie his development and confidence for basically no reason is unacceptable. The former no. 3 overall prospect in the 2023 class should 100% look to transfer this offseason.
