Cam Rising Ruled Out For 2024 Season, Could Earn 8th Year Of Eligibility

It feels as if Utah quarterback Cam Rising has been playing college football since 2018 … oh wait, he has. Rising is currently in his seventh (!) season, and unfortunately for him, it has come to an end. It was announced Monday he would miss the remainder of the 2024 season with a leg injury.

However, there is a pathway for him to earn an eighth season of eligibility.

Under NCAA rules , players can play up to four games in a single season and still redshirt, or miss time due to “hardship.”

For Rising, this is the story of his career. His first collegiate season at Texas in 2018 he redshirted before transferring to Utah, where he would once again redshirt. The 2020 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury. He would suffer a major knee injury in the Rose Bowl in 2022, causing him to miss all of 2023. Now, another leg injury will cause him to miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

I’m not sure I understand the point of coming back for yet another season. A career 63 percent passer with just a 53/17 TD:INT ratio, Cam Rising has spent enough time at the collegiate level. Going back for his eighth season doesn’t do anything for his NFL stock if that’s the idea here. He could’ve been healthy for four seasons in a row and likely been a late-day three pick, if at all. Someone has to get in his ear and tell him enough is enough.

It would be pretty funny if Cam Rising returned to Utah for another season. He will be turning 26 before the end of the 2025 season, which would terrify any NFL general manager from drafting him, but if that’s what he wants to do who are we to tell him he shouldn’t?
