Jets admit two costly offseason mistakes by trading for Davante Adams

One of the New York Jets ' greatest offseason needs was upgrading the team's receiving corps.

The Jets dedicated an early free-agent signing along with a Day 2 draft pick to the effort, but the results have been less than sufficient through the season's first six weeks. The lack of production from WR3 through WR6 likely played a factor in New York's willingness to trade for All-Pro Davante Adams on Tuesday morning.

Outside of Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard, Jets' wide receiver have accounted for only 14 catches on 24 targets for 171 yards and no touchdowns over six games. In a largely disappointing development, neither of the team's two key offseason additions have been productive.

After signing former Los Angeles Chargers ' WR2 Mike Williams, the Jets traded up at the NFL draft to select "YAC King" Malachi Corley. Heading into Week 7, Williams already appears on his way out the door while Corley can't even get onto the field.

Williams, who is about 12.5 months removed from a torn ACL, has seen his usage tick up, but production has not followed. Logging 53 percent of offensive snaps, he has secured 10 of 17 targets for 145 yards.

The Jets' final offensive possessions in each of the last two losses have ended on interceptions intended for Williams. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers suggested that the receiver ran the wrong route on the 3rd-and-16 play against the Buffalo Bills .

"I was throwing it to the red line, but when I got to about here, I realized he was running an in-breaker so I had to kind of adjust it a little bit. The play is two guys vertical, one guy down the seam, one guy down the red line," said Rodgers following the 23-20 loss on Monday Night Football.

Adams's arrival will only further marginalize Williams's role in the receivers' room. There have already been reports that the Jets are looking to trade Williams prior to the approaching deadline.

Then, there's the bizarre fact that New York liked Corley enough to trade up for him, but the coaching staff has apparently since decided that the rookie has little value to this offense. Corley, who became known for his ability to gain yards after contact in college, played only three offensive snaps over his first three games and was a healthy scratch for the next three .

Either Corley is grossly overwhelmed by the speed and complexity of the NFL game or the Jets grossly misevaluated him as a prospect.

Both moves are trending toward disastrous, and general manager Joe Douglas can only hope that Adams can make everyone forget about his two offseason whiffs.
