Frost Grips Southern Wisconsin: Freeze Warning in Effect Until Morning

Sunny skies are coming, but fire risks rise this week.

Freeze warning blankets Southern Wisconsin as temperatures plunge. Fire risks emerge with dry air and gusty winds later this week.

[MILWAUKEE] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:51 AM CDT on October 16, 2024.

Freeze Warnings and Cold Temperatures Blanket Southern Wisconsin

Southern Wisconsin wakes up to frost and freezing conditions this morning, with the National Weather Service issuing a Freeze Warning until 9 AM CDT. Temperatures have plummeted to upper 20s in South Central Wisconsin and the lower 30s along the lakeshore. Widespread frost affects much of the area, urging residents to protect plants and outdoor equipment.

A Gradual Warm-Up on the Way, But Fire Risks Loom

Expect clear skies and a gradual warm-up by this afternoon, with highs in the mid-50s. Tonight, another wave of frost and freezing conditions is likely, with lows again dipping into the lower to mid-30s.

A warming trend begins Thursday, as southwest winds increase, driving highs into the 60s. However, with very low humidity—dropping to 23-27%—and gusty winds, areas northwest and southwest of Madison could face elevated fire weather conditions by Thursday afternoon.

Weekend Outlook: Warmer, Dry, and Sunny

Here’s the forecast through the weekend:

    • Thursday: Highs in the mid-60s with gusty southwest winds.
    • Friday: Low humidity and gusty winds persist, increasing fire weather risks northwest of Madison.
    • Saturday: Sunny and mild with highs near 70°F.
    • Sunday: Temperatures warm further into the low to mid-70s under clear skies.
