Bronny James Recalls Cavaliers Tradition That Scared Him as a Kid

Bronny James’ arrival in the NBA makes a lot of people feel old. There was a time when he was just a kid watching his dad, future Basketball Hall of Famer LeBron James, lead the charge for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Fast forward to 2024, Bronny not only made it to the NBA but he’s somehow found his way to play alongside LeBron with the Los Angeles Lakers.

But looking back at when he was just starting to fall in love with basketball, Bronny, who just turned 20 years old on Oct. 6, recalled a tradition during Cavaliers home games that used to terrify him.

“I remember being scared of the fire coming out of the sword,” Bronny told Hanif Abdurraqib of Men’s Health during an interview.

The Cavs’ logo, of course, incorporates an image of a sword, so it was a ubiquitous piece of imagery for Bronny when he was growing up.

Bronny is no longer afraid of swords on fire. There are more important things that concern him today, like the challenges that come with being a professional player, especially for a rookie in the NBA.

For what it’s worth, Bronny only has four points, four rebounds, and and assist through four games in the 2024 NBA preseason. He also has turned the ball over five times in that span while shooting only 12.5 percent from the field.
