Phillies All-Star projected for trading block after manager’s return

The Philadelphia Phillies will be making some changes.

After a disappointing early playoff exit, their roster is set for a few tweaks, perhaps even some significant upgrades. But one thing about the team is now confirmed to stay the same next season, as the front office has elected to extend manager Rob Thomson through 2026.

With the return of Thomson, though, some personnel changes could be imminent. Projecting those changes for FanSided, Zachary Rotman listed reigning All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm as a player who should now be on the trade block.

“Relying on Bohm to be the hitter everyone expects him to be in October feels like a worthwhile gamble to make, but what if the Phillies can land a big bat in a deal on the market?” Rotman asked. “If the Phillies want to start hitting in October, seeing what they can get for a player who has a history of struggles in October might be a good start.”

In the best year of his career this season, Bohm slashed .280/.332/.448 with 15 homers and 97 RBI. But a late-season slump dragged into the Phillies’ single playoff series against the New York Mets, which saw Bohm on and off the bench. He had just one hit in 13 playoff at bats this year.

As a result, he could be the kind of player that the Phillies leverage to add a more marginal piece or different style of hitter to their lineup. The team is virtually unable to part ways with core players like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler or Trea Turner, and so Bohm might ultimately be the casualty of their need to switch things up with relatively few options for doing so.

“Running back virtually the exact same team with the exact same coaching staff after another disappointing exit shouldn’t be an option,” Rotman added. “If the coaching staff is coming back, major changes need to be made involving players.”

It makes no sense to keep getting rid of young promising players in exchange for so-called bats that get here and can't hit or so-called amazing pitchers that get here and are awful. When will it be the coaching staffs fault. I've been hoping for 3 years they'd be fired. And I like Topper, but damn he is awful with pitchers. Pitchers are creatures of habit. If they are starters, they start, middle relievers relive when needed, closers close and savers, save. They need to settle in that routine. And dear Lord, when it's the 4th game of a playoff and you are losing, you bring in the best you have. WHY did he not put in Wheeler??Stubbs is the heart of this team. He's a good catcher and a clutch hitter. The same with Marsh. There I said it.
